Need a job? McDonald’s is hiring.

50,000 people to be exact.

The fast food company is set to add 50,000 new employees across America beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19.

Each restaurant will add an average of 4 new employees according to McDonalds’s USA CEO Jan Fields.

That number could be be tripled in Pauls Valley though.

“We’ll be (hiring) 7-to-12 people,” said Gary Cook, Pauls Valley McDonald’s owner operator. “We’re looking for crew members and also some management.”

He added that the PV location currently boasts a total of 45 employees; the hiring spree could boost that count by over 26 percent.

“McDonald’s is trying to gear up for the summer business,” Cook stated. “Summer’s are always a busy time for all of us…. we’re looking to have more (staff) than (typical) because we feel like the business is going to be good.”

Cook also said that the hiring date for McDonald’s in Oklahoma differs from that for restaurants in other states.

While locations outside of the state are set to officially begin hiring tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19, locations inside the state will wait to beging hiring this Wednesday.

“The reason why…. the bombing (anniversary) of the federal building in Oklahoma City,” Cook explained. “We decided that we needed to pay tribute to that, and so we aren’t going to have anything that (interferes) with that.”

Up to 200 of the birds were sighted sitting on a field owned by Menefee Farms east of Pauls Valley and north of Wynnewood at one point earlier this week.

One farm employee stated that the hawks have inhabited the partially plowed field for the past week and a-half attracting occasional onlookers.

He added that the majority of the foul “cleared out” yesterday evening; he cited the extra vehicular traffic around the field as a possible reason.

A gathering of between 60-72 of the birds were spotted on the field earlier this morning.

Ruby stated that she recalls only one-or-two documented sightings of this size involving hawks elsewhere in Oklahoma.

She also said it’s probable the birds represent other species of hawk in addition to the Red-tailed Hawk.

Six months (or even a year ago) I might have applauded the efforts of people in the social space who responded to online requests for help with a self-promoting tweet. Six months ago.

Then, I discovered search.Twitter.com for myself and Web 2.0 thought leaders like Gary Vaynerchuk.

Now such self-promotion (without context) makes me question the business sense of some “professionals”.

Take for example a tweet I wrote today:

Note that the tweet was written to one person, and not the public at-large; it solicited the following responses.

Let’s examine: first, none of the tweets I received were from the person I tweeted. Further, no one asked if it was okay for them to enter the conversation. Second, only one of the four responses addressed my need (that logo).

The other three pushed a link at me, and one of them—the first responder—stopped with a link.

Admittedly, I have sent promotional tweets to complete strangers before; they even included links. Prematurely.

What bothered me most about the above responses was the lack of compassion I felt as someone in need. Instead I felt I was a profit to be pimped. So which graphic designer did I go with? This one…

I’ve broken promises—and her heart—more times than I can count or care to remember. Yet, she has chosen to stay with me and love me (even when I deserved to be hated) and life is better because of her.

We’ve shared the past decade together (eight of those married) and I’ve learned a lot about marriage.

Some of it no one told me, but I will share the insights with you…

You will never have another chance to love the woman that is your wife. Give her all of your heart.

A man’s appetite for the touch of his wife is an acquired taste that must be nurtured and protected.

There’s more…

1. Success at work is success at work. Success at home is success at life.

2. Collect experiences; not stuff. Give away stuff. Thank you, Mark Batterson.

3. Forgive others, forgive God, and forgive yourself.

4. I value more the voices of those speaking into my life when I realize that they will one day be gone.
5. No one works harder than the owner of the business. Thank you, Allen Waters (a.k.a. my grandfather).

7. There is no such thing as a balanced life. Thank you, Mike Foster and Jud Wilhite.

8. Hustle. It’s what separates an idea from an idea that people know about.

First, the thought process for this series originated on August 10, 2010; the above list was written one month later.

Next, with my 30th birthday pending (March 25), I’ve taken the time to reflect on how I’ve changed after another decade on this planet. I also took the time to reflect on the habits that I started—and stopped—in my twenties.

The habits I started…

The first habit I started (in preparation for marriage) and maintain to this day is that of exercising. At the time I was 20-years old, and worked out with a friend twice my age. Note: I was married the following year.

Then, there are the habits of eating healthy and reading the Bible with consistency. Both have literally transformed my life. Somewhere during my mid-20s I started flossing regularly and brushing my teeth at least once a day.

All four are also habits that I continue to this day.

Then, there are those four late-bloomer habits: tweeting, blogging, drinking coffee, and recycling. In my defense, Twitter didn’t exist until I was 25-years old. Note: I started blogging and tweeting while on a vacation in California.

I don’t remember where I was when I drank my first cup of coffee. I can honestly say, however, that my preferences for the drink have changed. Truckstop and McDonald’s coffee don’t cut it anymore.

It’s now locally-roasted-whole-beans-then-fresh-ground-and-made-with-an-Aeropress for me.

The habits I stopped…

Let’s start with the one habit that I stopped and have left in the grave: drinking soft drinks.

The combination of carbonation, imitation ingredients, and the calories that I would rather eat gave me reason to stop. Water is officially my favorite beverage; filtered from the tap is fine.

Now for the habits that I am working on leaving in my past: speeding and cursing.

I’ve observed that if I give myself more time to reach a destination I am less likely to drive over the speed limit.

Admittedly, I “cuss” when I get mad or emotionally hurt. Most times it’s only in my mind, but sometimes the words are spoken aloud. This is an area of my life that my wife and the Holy Spirit are holding me accountable in.

The following recipe was prepared by @PaulFrankWang, and placed here for you to prepare and share.

Grilled Sweet Corn Salad

Ingredients:

12 whole ears of fresh sweet corn

3 cloves of fresh garlic

2 teaspoons of chipotle powder

1 large red bell pepper

1 large yellow (or orange) bell pepper

1 large red onion

1 large lemon

1 large lime

bunch of fresh cilantro

ground black pepper to taste

sea salt to taste

Note: Wang added the salt, pepper, and chipotle powder while making this dish. He said to “season in layers” when preparing anything comprised of multiple ingredients. He explained that ingredients are perfected when seasoned during the preparation process versus waiting to season at the end.

First, grill the ears of sweet corn (brushed with oil) over medium heat on a grill.

Then, chop and toss together the garlic, peppers, onion, and cilantro in a large mixing bowl.

Next, remove the corn from the grill and allow to cool slightly in a separate bowl.

Then, cut the grilled ears of corn into halves and relocate back into the bowl.

Next, “bald” the corn (remove the kernels from the cob) using a sharp knife. Set the kernels aside.

Finally, add the corn to the salad mixture.

Toss all of the vegetables together (stirring from the bottom of the dish toward the top).

To finish the dish, slice and squeeze the lemon and lime juices over the salad.

“Grandpa Quiroz” (pron. key-dose) is the only living grandfather that remains in my family. He lives in southern California, and will celebrate his 82nd birthday next month. He is also the only remaining child of six siblings.
